Q: What is the difference between tags and keywords?

A: Tags are self-assigned “labels” that you can use to categorize the posts on your blog. For instance, if you have a blog niche about student loans, you can create a tag called “student loans” for all blog entries pertaining to that specific topic. When a viewer clicks on that tag, they will be brought to a page listing all blog entries associated to that tag.

Keywords are used by search engines to identify what your blog and your blog articles are about. If you optimize an article on your blog with a specific keyword, the search engine will be able to identify it and will hopefully assign your article a decent page rank for that particular keyword based on its algorithms.

Q: What are backlinks and why are they important?

A: A backlink is a link to your website that appears anywhere on another website. Gaining backlinks is not a task you can instantly accomplish by editing your website. You can gain backlinks by creating content and having an online presence that others will want to share. Having backlinks gives your website legitimacy and authority in Google's eyes (if other people are linking to your website, that means it must have good, relevant content).

Q: How can I gain backlinks?

A: The easiest way to try and begin building backlinks is to write good quality, unique content and encourage others to share it. Not only should you be promoting your content on social media, but approach publications and media outlets about having your content featured or about writing a guest post. Think about gaining backlinks as gaining referrals for your website.

Q: What is domain authority and how can I increase mine?

A: Domain Authority is a scoring system which predicts how well your website will rank on search engines. Domain authority takes into account many factors of your SEO including backlinks and therefore cannot be directly influenced. It is measured on a logarithmic scale and often fluctuates according to Google's algorithm updates meaning it is best used "as a competitive metric against other sites as opposed to a historic measure of your internal SEO efforts."
