Meta tags are information about content that search engines such as Google utilize to classify and rank your website. By filling in the abstract (one sentence about your website/page), a description (a brief description of the content) and keywords (words that search engines pick up on), you will optimize your ranking, allowing internet users to find your site more easily.
Meta tags can be added on every type of page (custom page, blog post, event etc.). Here's how:
STEP 1: Log in to your website dashboard (if you don't know how to do that, click here). Once you're in, click on Edit Site at the top left.
STEP 2: Navigate to the page you'd like to meta tags to and click on the Edit Current tab (or Customize if you've never edited this page before).
STEP 3: Scroll down to find the Meta tags menu item and click on it. Enter a Description and Keywords for this page.
Here are some general guidelines for using effective keywords.
a.) Keywords should directly draw from important words found in the content. For instance, if the content mentions the word "loans" several times, it would be a good idea to use "loans" as your keyword. Keywords should complement the content on the page.
b.) Be sure that all keywords are separated by commas (e.g. retirement, senior investment, personal finance).
c.) Ensure that you don't insert more than 8 keywords. Adding excess keywords that do not relate can harm website ranking.
Disclaimer: It should be noted that although adding keywords will help in your SEO ranking, it is not a guarantee that your website will instantly appear in certain searches. Instead, this can be a start. There are many factors and algorithms that come into play when search engines determine your website's ranking.
