The “Page not found” statistic in your site dashboard represents pages that users have reached but do not exist or no longer exist. This can happen for a number of reasons, including:

  • Someone clicked an outdated link (from an old email, social post, or another website)
  • A page was archived, removed, or renamed (and the URL changed)
  • A URL from an older version of the website is still being used/bookmarked
  • Someone typed the URL incorrectly

Recommended Next Steps

The built-in dashboard stats are meant to be a simple, high-level snapshot, so they it doesn’t show which specific URLs caused the 404 visits.

To reduce the number of “page not found” errors:

Set up Google Analytics

If you have Google Analytics set up, you can usually find the specific URLs there. If you don’t have it set up yet, we recommend adding it for more detailed tracking going forward (including which URLs are generating 404 errors and other traffic insights). Redirect Broken Links

For known broken URLs, the best approach is to set up redirects from the old/broken URLs to the correct pages on your current site.

You can submit a ticket here with a list of pages you would like redirected and where you would like to redirect them, and we can help you with that!
