You might have heard that we don’t own or host your domain name - only your website. What does this mean?
There are three factors for a website to work and display on the web:
- Website Host - This is us at Advisor Websites! We store, build and display your website using our platform. Think of this as your phone number that people will use to reach you.
- Domain Name - This is the website address(www.example.com). As it suggests, this is your name on the internet and how people get to know you. This is normally provided by companies like GoDaddy or Network Solutions.
- DNS (Domain Name System) - is how we connect your website to your domain name. Think of it as the phonebook where people can look up your name and find your phone number. These are usually set up within your domain name provider.
However, there are website providers that also handle the domain name and DNS themselves. If this is the case for your current website, you will need to transfer the domain ownership to a third-party domain provider (e.g. GoDaddy) in order to point your website to us.
1. Reach out to your previous website provider or domain registrar with the following email:
“I would like to transfer my domain name to a <state your new provider>. Please unlock my domain name and send me the transfer code. “
2. Once you receive the code and confirmation, the next steps will differ depending on your new domain provider. The main thing you need to do is initiate the transfer on their side (new provider). If you need assistance, I recommend contacting your new domain provider.
The above instructions can also be followed if you move from one domain provider to another.
